Icelanders Flock to Sunny Destinations Again

In the past two years, Icelanders have increasingly bought tickets to sunny destinations after a slump in such trips following the banking collapse in 2008. Icelandic travel agency Úrval-Útsýn recorded a ten to 15 percent increase between 2009 and 2010.

“The big change is that people have started booking with more notice than they used to. Now they seem more determined to go,” CEO of Úrval-Útsýn Thorsteinn Gudjónsson told Fréttabladid.

Gudjónsson stated there had been a 50 percent decrease in sunny breaks to foreign destinations immediately after the banking collapse, mostly among young people or people who had recently invested in real estate.

“That group almost disappeared after the collapse but is now back on the move. The recession was much less apparent among older customers,” he added.
