Icelanders Crowd Opening of Bauhaus

More than 10,000 people visited the German hardware chain store Bauhaus during its opening in Grafarholt, Reykjavík, last weekend—a new record. Between 7,000 and 8,000 people are believed to have come there on Saturday alone.

“People were determined to buy something; there were no fewer products in their carts today than yesterday,” managing director of Bauhaus in Iceland, Halldór Ó. Sigurðsson, told Morgunblaðið yesterday.

The opening of Bauhaus had even more of a turnout than the opening of Lindex in Smáralind, Kópavogur, last autumn, when approximately 10,000 people attended the first three days of opening, emptying the clothing store’s shelves.

At the time it was considered to be the most attended opening of a new store in Iceland.
