Icelanders Crazy for Ice Cream in Good Weather

Demand for ice cream at the capital’s parlors has been extreme these last few sunny summer days in Reykjavík. In the new and popular parlor Valdís, which opened at the Grandi wharf in early summer, the numbers queuing system collapsed.

“Things have been crazy,” Valdís staff member Ninna Karla Katrínardóttir told mbl.is. “[On Tuesday] night more than 100 people were waiting to be served so the numbers system had made a full cycle. The numbers only go to 100 so suddenly two people shared the same number.”

Ninna laughs when asked whether the numbers shouldn’t go to 1,000 to meet the demand. “I guess. But the numbers also have letters so that should prevent confusion.”

The weather forecast remains good, so Ninna is expecting continued traffic to the parlor.

Valdís serves 20 different flavors of gelato scoops, sorbet and also soft serve, made by its owner Gylfi Þór Valdimarsson, a chef who recently moved back from Copenhagen.
