His name was Bjarni Guðmundur Ásgeirsson and he came from Kleifar in Seyðisfjörður in Ísafjarðardjúp, the West Fjords, bb.is reports.
This is according to Ólafur Hannibalsson, the editor of Djúpmannatal, a registry of inhabitants in the Ísafjarðardjúp region and their biographies from 1801 up until today, which is about to be published after almost 50 years of work.
Ólafur said Bjarni was born on August 4, 1870, and was 41 when he died if he was indeed on the ship’s crew. Bjarni was an educated steersman and started sailing at a young age.
