A 23-year old Icelandic man was sentenced to 16 months in prison in the United Kingdom yesterday for having groomed a 14-year old girl on the Internet before travelling to the UK and abusing her. This is reported in all the main media.
The man was arrested in February at a hotel in Burnley where he had spent a night with the girl. According to reports, the two met online, and exchanged SMS messages as well as chatting on MSN Messenger for several months before the Icelander travelled to the UK to meet with the minor. He had met with her twice in Burnley before the February incident, and during one of those times had spent the night at her home under the pretext of being a friend from a nearby school.
The man was remanded in custody immediately after the arrest, and can thus apply for parole in a months’ time, after having served half of his sentence. He will be on a list over paedophiles in the UK for the next ten years. The judge recommended that he be deported from the UK immediately upon his release.
