Icelander in Prison for Drug Smuggling in Australia

Singuringi Hólmgrímsson, a 26-year-old Icelandic citizen, was handed a seven-year sentence by a Melbourne court today for attempting to smuggle cocaine to the country in his and his travel companion’s suitcases. The latter was unaware of the drugs’ presence.

The judge stated Siguringi was “cruel and heartless” for making his innocent friend endure custody for 567 days, theage.com.au reports.

Siguringi is said to have agreed to the drug smuggling to get out of a drug debt of ISK 2.1 million (USD 16,000, EUR 14,000) in Iceland. The 1.2 kg of pure cocaine is estimated to have a street value of up to AUD 2.9 million (USD 2.2 million, EUR 2.0 million).
