Brynjar Mettinisson, a 25-year-old Icelandic citizen, was arrested in Bangkok this week for drug violations and taken to prison. Neither his mother nor his lawyer have been allowed to communicate with him.
“I just pray to God, there is nothing else I can do,” Mettinisson’s mother, Borghildur Antonsdóttir told visir.is. “He has been given a lawyer who […] will visit him next week and do his best to have permission granted for him to call me.”
Antonsdóttir said her son was having dinner at a restaurant with his Thai girlfriend on Monday when a stranger walked up to them. Suddenly the police arrived and forced him and the man, who is Australian, into a police car.
Amphetamines were found in the pockets of the Australian but Mettinisson swears he didn’t know about them beforehand.
The description of the arrest is based on an account from Mettinisson’s girlfriend. “She doesn’t speak English very well and I don’t understand much of what she’s saying so I’m not 100 percent sure that this is exactly how it happened,” Antonsdóttir added.
She said it is hard knowing her son is in the prison. Allegedly, he has been beaten and not given any food apart from that brought to him by his girlfriend.
