The 41-year-old Icelandic handball coach Dagur Sigurðsson has been hired as the national coach of the German handball team, as announced today. The contract is valid until 2017 with the possibility of extending it to 2020.
Dagur has coached Füchse Berlin since 2009 with the German team becoming one of the best in the world during his time at its helm. Germany’s Handball-Bundesliga is the world’s strongest handball division by far. Dagur was also the national handball coach of Austria from 2008 to 2010.
He will coach Füchse Berlin in the coming winter and step down in June next year, mbl.is reports.
As a handball player, Dagur was Icelandic champion five times and Austrian champion four times.
Dagur played 215 international games for Iceland and scored 397 goals for his country.
Two years ago, Handball-Planet voted Dagur as the world’s best handball coach, ahead of Barcelona’s Xavi Pascual, and Kiel coach and fellow Icelander Alfreð Gíslason.
