Davíð Örn Bjarnason, the 28-year-old Icelandic citizen who was arrested at the airport in Antalya, Turkey, on March 8 on suspicion of attempted smuggling of antiquities, was yesterday handed a 375-day suspended sentence by the courts in Turkey, ruv.is reports.

Davíð and his fiancée Þóra Birgisdóttir were stopped by police at the airport in Antalya after a piece of marble they had bought at a market during a holiday to Turkey was found in their luggage. Davíð was arrested for attempted smuggling of antiquities but Þóra could leave.
Davíð says he and his partner had no idea that the souvenir was considered an antiquity and they have no intention of returning to the country after the ordeal.
Davíð, who spent a week in prison in Turkey and a further ten days under a travel ban, says he must also pay a fine, about which he expects to hear more in the coming days.
