Icelander Found Guilty in Faroe Islands Will Not Appeal

Icelandic citizen Birgir Páll Marteinsson, 25, who was found guilty in participating in the “Polar Star” drug-smuggling case in the Faroe Islands earlier this month and sentenced to seven years in prison, has decided not to appeal.

According to Morgunbladid, Marteinsson made the decision in consultation with his lawyer Óla Jákup Kristoffersen.

Kristoffersen said Marteinsson did not want to risk that his appeal might lead to the sentence being prolonged to ten years like the prosecution had demanded or staying in prison in the Faroe Islands or Denmark while his appeal was being processed.
