An Icelandic man in his sixties was found dead in an ice cave last night around midnight. RÚV reported first.
South Iceland Police received a call from the man’s travel companions around 6:00 yesterday evening after he entered an ice cave on the southwest side of Hofsjökull glacier but did not come out again. The cave had high levels of sulfur dioxide gas, a toxic gas produced naturally by volcanic activity.
Around 130 search and rescue volunteers were transported to the scene, along with emergency crews. Rescuers were provided with special equipment to enter the cave safely. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident. A post on their Facebook page thanked all the rescuers and service providers involved in the search.
