Icelander European Champion in BJJ

Icelandic wrestler Jósep Valur Gudlaugsson won the gold medal at the European Championship in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Portugal last weekend. Gudlaugsson has a blue belt in BJJ and competed in the -82.3 kg category.

“I have practiced BJJ over the past three years with Mjölnir in Reykjavík but in recent months I’ve practiced in Paris where my girlfriend is studying,” Gudlaugsson told Morgunbladid.

His trainer is Paulo Sergio Santos, who is well known in the international world of BJJ.

Gudlaugsson has also practiced gymnastics, weight lifting and won awards in fitness competitions.

However, he was not in his best shape at last weekend’s tournament. “I managed to catch the flu last week and therefore I couldn’t do much else than rest before the competition. But all was well once the adrenaline started to flow during wrestling.”

Gudlaugsson said BJJ has gained increased popularity in Iceland in recent years, mostly thanks to the sport club Mjölnir’s efforts and the international achievements of Gunnar Nelson who placed Iceland on the BJJ world map.
