Following a court order, the man was taken into custody. He has been provided with legal aid but it is uncertain how long the investigation will take.

In Argentina, the penalty for drug trafficking is severe.

The Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs is following the matter closely.

This is not the first time that an Icelander is arrested for drug trafficking in South America. In 2009 a man in his fifties, a former detective with the Icelandic National Police was arrested with five kilograms of cocaine on his person. Also, a 30-year-old man has since 2009 awaited verdict in Brazil for attempting to smuggle six kilograms of cocaine out of the country.
