A 28-year-old Icelandic man was arrested for drug smuggling at the Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on June 6 and has been kept in the Belém II prison in Sao Paulo since. The local police have announced he was caught with over six kilos of cocaine.
The man, who was on his way to Lisbon, Portugal, was caught after a random check at the airport. According to Fréttabladid, police undertake regular, almost daily, searches for drugs at the airport.
The Icelandic police authority is not yet involved in the case and, according to Fréttabladid, Iceland’s Foreign Ministry has not received a request for assistance from the detainee or his family. Pétur Ásgeirsson, the Foreign Ministry’s office director, would not comment on the case.
Two other Icelanders are being held in Brazil for attempted drug smuggling. One was caught with two kilos of baby powder, which he believed was cocaine, and is currently teaching English in a community service program.
The other was caught with 12 kilos of hash on his way into the country. He could be facing a long prison sentence.
