Icelander caught in Bangkok explosion

Captain Sölvi Axelsson nearly lost his life in Bangkok, Thailand, on New Year’s Eve when a bomb went off close to where he was standing.

Axelsson had been walking away from a taxi motorcycle and had taken only 40 steps when a bomb went off to his right. He was thrown up in the air and landed 25 to 30 meters from where he had been standing. Morgunbladid reports.

Axelsson temporarily lost his hearing on the right ear and his shirt was torn to pieces by the blast, but a lamppost, which stood between him and the bomb, prevented further injuries. Axelsson said people were dead and badly injured all around him.

According to foreign news reports, three were killed and about 40 injured in nine explosions in Bangkok on Sunday. Axelsson said he suspected many more had died.
