Icelandair Boston Plane to Leave for Iceland Shortly

The Icelandair plane, which was supposed to leave for Boston to Iceland last night but was grounded due to the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, is scheduled to take off in an hour and a half. The flight was delayed due to risk of volcanic ash fall.

“We were already inside the airplane and were preparing to travel back home when we heard of the eruption. We waited there for a long time while they decided what to do and then we received a message, from the airline’s executives, I believe, that we should stay put,” described flight attendant Sif Hilmarsdóttir to

“Now it is 9:30 in the morning here and just now the captain announced that we should go to the airport,” Hilmarsdóttir said. The airplane is scheduled to leave at 4:30 pm Icelandic time.

Hilmarsdóttir has worked as a flight attendant for 12 years. “I have had many strange experiences before but nothing like this. The passengers, who were already inside the airplane but had to disembark because of a volcanic eruption in Iceland, were undeniably taken aback but everyone stayed calm, though.”

Flights to and from Iceland that were delayed because of the eruption are now taking off but all domestic flights have been canceled today. Visit for updates on the international flight schedule.
