Iceland was recently chosen as the most beautiful filming location at the international awards ceremony International Film Business Awards, Vísir reports. The ceremony took place as part of Indywood Films Carnival in India, one of the biggest promotional festivals in the film industry.
Six Indian film productions have filmed in Iceland in recent years, according to information from Promote Iceland. The largest production of those was the movie Dilwale, which featured the Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Parts of the movie were filmed in the south of Iceland in 2015.
Einar Tómasson, who leads the Film in Iceland program on behalf of Promote Iceland, accepted the award. “This kind of award is greatly appreciated as it brings a lot of attention. It’s not bad receiving a star such as Shah Rukh Khan to the country as well”. Khan has been referred to as the ‘King of Bollywood’ and is thought to be one of the richest actors in the world.
“I think that people maybe do not realize how large the film industry is in India. More than 1500 films are made here every year, and there are more tickets sold here than anywhere else in the world”, Einar commented further.
Promote Iceland is a public-private partnership which aims to assist in the promotion of Icelandic culture abroad as well as assisting Icelandic companies in foreign markets. One of its stated goals is to attract tourists and investments to the country. The ‘Film in Iceland’ program has led to movie productions increasingly casting an eye towards Iceland as a filming location. It is a reimbursement scheme which offers a 25% reimbursement of the costs incurred in film and television productions.
