The convention is the first of its kind and is considered a major step in the fight against illegal arms trade.

The Icelandic Red Cross, Amnesty International in Iceland and Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson met last week to discuss the agreement.

“Approval of this agreement is good news and a major historical milestone in the fight against armed conflict, violence and human rights abuse,” the minister said in a statement.

A total of 154 countries endorsed the agreement, three were against and 23 abstained.
