Iceland’s achievement is described as surprising considering the difficult economic situation the country is currently facing, Morgunbladid reports.

Iceland is followed by Sweden, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Singapore, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway. The US, which topped the index last year, now places 11th.

A report accompanying the index states that the Iceland has a good infrastructure, that technological know-how is widespread, education is at a high level and that there is significant investment in education which creates opportunities in the field of innovation.
