The friendly football match between the Icelandic and Slovakian men’s national teams ended with a 1-1 draw at Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík yesterday. Iceland performed poorly in the first half but upped their game towards the end.
Iceland’s goalkeeper Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson deflected two shots from Slovakia before Slovakian shooter Robert Vittek managed to score in the 35th minute. Kristján Örn Sigurdsson scored the goal for Iceland in the 59th minute, Fréttabladid reports.
“I thought we played well today, to achieve a tie against a strong nation and even being closer to winning than they were,” said Iceland’s coach Ólafur Jóhannesson. “It was a good game and good practice for the game against Norway.”
Norway beat Scotland 4-0 yesterday, knocking Iceland down to the bottom seat of the 9th qualifying round for the 2010 World Championship in South Africa. Norway and Iceland will play on September 5.
