Iceland Ties Belgium in Football, Gets New Judo Star

icelandicflagThe Icelandic national team in women’s football failed to follow up on their victory over Norway on Saturday in the game against Belgium in the European Championship 2013 qualifying group stage match yesterday evening and had to accept a goalless draw.

Morgunbladid stated that this is reminiscent of Iceland’s participation in the last European qualifying round when the team lost against Slovenia after an unexpected victory over France, asking whether the Icelandic players underestimated their Belgian opponents, lost their nerves or whether this was simply a case of bad luck.

In other sport news, Icelandic athlete Ingi Thór Kristjánsson won the Open Swedish Judo Championship in the -73 kilo category for 20-year-olds and younger fighters in Stockholm on Sunday.

He was also named the championship’s best athlete. There were 255 contestants of eight different nationalities from the Nordic countries, Germany, the Netherlands and Serbia; 28 of whom competed in Kristjánsson’s category.

“I was very surprised. They were taking photos and all of a sudden I was called back up to the podium. It was great,” Kristjánsson told Morgunbladid. He hopes to compete in the Olympics in 2016 or 2020.
