Iceland Supports Palestine’s Independence

Minister for Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphédinsson declared yesterday that Iceland will vote in support of Palestinian independence if a resolution to that effect will be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly. He believes the majority of member states are for independence.

President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas has been lobbying for the submission before the UN of a resolution on Palestinian independence for some time. Skarphédinsson will attend the assembly, which convenes today, on Iceland’s behalf, reports.

The minister said Iceland’s position is clear: Palestine belongs in the ranks of UN’s sovereign and independent member states and the borders of an independent Palestine should be the way they were before 1967.
