Iceland Summer Cottages Popular with Tourists

Summer cottages in Iceland, long popular with locals, are increasingly becoming a hit with foreign tourists; cottage rental website Bungalo reports a more than 100 percent increase in overall bookings between years.

According to the company’s founder Haukur Guðjónsson, foreign tourists now make more bookings through—the largest booking website for Icelandic summerhouses—than Icelanders.

“When our website first went live our customers were almost exclusively Icelanders but the interest of foreign tourists has grown rapidly and today the majority of our customers are from outside Iceland,” he said.

The website has more than 300 cottages for rent and according to Haukur, the arrangement is both beneficial for tourists, who want to better experience Icelandic nature and culture, and for Icelandic families who are able to generate revenue through renting out their accommodation for part of the year.
