The Icelandic Film and Television Academy announced on Monday that it has chosen Mamma Gógó by director and screenwriter Fridrik Thór Fridriksson as Iceland’s submission for the 2011 Academy Awards.
Mamma Gógó is an autobiographical film about Gógó, an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s who runs into trouble because of her disease. Her son is a young filmmaker and is having financial problems after producing the film Children of Nature.
Fridriksson’s Children of Nature was nominated as Best Foreign Language Film in 1992 and Fridriksson went on to become one of Iceland’s most respected directors.
Only one other Icelandic submission has been nominated for the Oscars, the short film The Last Farm by Rúnar Rúnarsson in 2006.
Mamma Gógó won three Eddas at the 2010 Icelandic Film and Television Awards; leading actress Kristbjörg Kjeld was named Best Actress.
