Iceland Struggles to Beat Austria in Handball

The Icelandic national team in men’s handball beat their Austrian opponents 26-23 after a difficult game in the World Championship in Sweden yesterday; Austria led by five goals, 16-11, at half time. Iceland now has a guaranteed spot in the intermediate heat.

According to Fréttabladid, the Icelandic players showed what they were made of in the second half with a solid defense and Björgvin Páll Gústavsson deflecting goals “like a berserk” in the goal area.

“It shows the team’s fabulous character. I can hardly believe it myself how the final score turned out. For a while Diddi [Ingimundur Ingimundarson; one of the defenders] and I felt as if they couldn’t score against us,” commented defender Sverre Jakobsson.

Iceland, boasting four victories in a row, will play against Norway tomorrow in its final game in preliminary round group B.
