Iceland Sports Highest Quality of Life

Iceland scored highest on a list comparing economic opportunities and the quality of life in 120 different countries, compiled by Long Island University. Iceland was considered having the best combination of factors contributing towards a model society.

Factors included in the Long Island University’s comparison were economic freedom, globalization, education and public health, Morgunbladid reports.

The study was undertaken by Panos Mourdoukoutas and Abraham Stefanidis at Long Island University.

According to Mourdoukoutas, the countries which topped the list are efficient in allowing the market to encourage people to be creative in an effort to improve their life economically.

At the same time the governments of these nations encourage a feeling of togetherness while searching for ways to create a safe working environment and protecting nature.

“With few exceptions the best countries have a combination of private companies and state-run institutions within a liberal democracy in the spirit of the 19th century,” the report states.

Canada, Sweden and Switzerland scored second, third and fourth on the list and the US placed 11th. All of the Nordic countries were in the top ten. Chad, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe were the bottom three countries.

Despite scoring highest on the list, Iceland was only at the top of one category; safety at work places. Iceland only placed 12th in the category on how easy it is to do business in each country.

The United Nations, Yale University and The Wall Street Journal were among sources used to obtain information for the study.
