New measurements by the company Loftmyndir ehf. have concluded that Iceland is smaller than previously believed.
Loftmyndir measured the length of the Icelandic coastline, and in doing so discovered that the land area of the country is 102,775 square kilometers, instead of the 103,000 which is usually quoted, RÚV reports.
The measurements were extrapolated from very high-resolution aerial photographs which have been taken of the Icelandic coastline in recent years. Previous calculations of the country’s size have been worked out from less accurate source data.
The company is now working on mapping islands and outcrops all around the Icelandic mainland.
