Iceland to Shut Doors on World

Keflavík International Airport will be completely closed next Friday, Christmas Day, for one day only.

Last Christmas the airport was open on the 25th thanks to one easyJet flight from and to Geneva in Switzerland. That was, in fact, the first Christmas Day that Keflavík International Airport had ever been open and Icelandic airlines never offer flights on Christmas Day, according to Túristi.is.

While other big airports in the Nordic region receive flights every day of the year, Icelandic airport workers are usually granted one day off and last year was the only exception to that rule to date, as foreign airlines have traditionally followed the Icelandic airlines’ lead—even though many of them offer flights to other destinations on Christmas Day.

This Christmas easyJet has also decided to cancel its flights to Iceland for one day. The airline’s staff were made aware of the fact that they were the only plane at the airport last Christmas, and it is believed this information may have filtered its way to head office and led to the change of mind.

Flights will return to normal on December 26.
