Icelanders and members of the French community in Iceland gathered in front of the French Embassy in Reykjavík this evening to show solidarity with France and pay their respects to the individuals who were killed or injured in the string of six attacks in Paris last night. A book of condolences has been opened at the embassy.
Harpa Concert Hall has been lit in the Tricolore—the colors of the French flag—joining other monuments around the world in a show of solidarity with France. The French flag is also being flown at half-mast.
According to the latest reports, 127 people were killed in the attacks and 352 injured, 99 critically, France 24 reports. French president François Hollande has declared a state of emergency and reinstated border checks.
Iceland’s foreign minister, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, issued a statement strongly condemning “the heinous terrorist attacks that have taken place in Paris” and stating that “the hearts and minds of Icelanders are with those affected.”
“It is clear that these were acts of barbaric extremism and will have to be met with calm and restraint. We stand behind the French nation during these critical times, mindful of the French values of freedom, equality and fraternity,” he stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Icelanders in Paris or those intending to travel to France, to monitor news and instructions from French authorities.
