Iceland Sends Red Cross Representative to Philippines

Engineer Orri Gunnarsson, representing the Icelandic Red Cross, will be among the first international relief workers to arrive in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.

Orri will work on helping to set up a mobile health service on the island of Samar. A total of 13 international emergency teams have been asked for help, according to a press release from the Red Cross.

Foreign minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson announced earlier this week that Iceland will be contributing ISK 12.3 million (USD 100,000, EUR 75,000) to relief efforts. The Filipino community has also been organizing a number of fundraising initiatives. A candle release ceremony take place at 7 pm tomorrow at Landakotskirkja.
