Iceland’s president, prime minister, foreign minister and Reykjavík’s mayor have joined leaders around the world in sending condolences to France after the terrorist attack at the offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris yesterday, ruv.is reports.
Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson tweeted: “We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks at #CharlieHebdo. A horrific act and our thoughts remain with the victims and their families.”
Foreign Minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson issued his condolences via Twitter too, writing, “Horrified by the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo. My sincere condolences to France on this dark day.”
President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson sent his condolences to French President François Holland.
Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson sent a letter to his Paris counterpart, Anne Hidalgo, this morning.
An English translation of the letter, sent in French, reads:
“Mayor Anne Hidalgo,
I want to extend on behalf of all the inhabitants of Reykjavík condolences for the atrocious attack in Paris on January 7. Freedom of speech is a basic right which all societies need to protect. Our thoughts are with the people of Paris, the victims of the attack and their friends and families.
