Iceland to send more peacekeepers to Sri Lanka

Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir announced this morning that Icelanders would continue to act as peacekeepers in Sri Lanka and that their numbers would increase from 4-5 to 10. This is reported by Fréttabladid online.

Denmark, Sweden and Finland have recently decided to pull their peacekeeping troops out of Sri Lanka and serious questions have arisen as to the safety of such troops with the recent unrest that has plagued the country. Norway and Iceland currently head peacekeeping there and were Iceland to pull out, the Ministry believes it would seriously jeopardize safety in the country.
