Iceland Qualifies for Handball World Cup

The Icelandic national team in men’s handball secured their seat in the Handball World Cup in 2013 after beating the Dutch 32-24 in the Netherlands on Saturday when the teams met for the second time in the preliminary round.

“It was what I had expected. There were a few hiccups to begin with but after that we played it safe,” Iceland’s coach Guðmundur Þ. Guðmundsson told Morgunblaðið.

Meanwhile, the Icelandic national team in women’s football made it to the top of their qualifying group in the preliminary round for the European Championship after beating Hungary 3-0 at their home turf, Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, last weekend.

The goals were scored by Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir, Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir and new recruit Sandra María Jessen. Iceland is now one point ahead of Norway.
