Iceland has become the first team to secure a place at the European Men’s Handball Championship 2026 after a commanding 33-21 victory over Greece in Reykjavik.
As reported in VIASPORT, the win marks Iceland’s 14th consecutive qualification for the European Championships.
The Icelandic side delivered a comprehensive display at a sold-out Laugardalshöll arena, with every outfield player but one finding themselves on the scoresheet.
Particular standouts includen Janus Smárason and Andri Rúnarsson, who each scored four goals without missing. Goalkeeper Björgvin Gustavsson proved to be equally instrumental to the team’s success, boasting an impressive 48% save rate with 16 stops.
Following the game, Iceland’s head coach, Snorri Steinn Guðjónsson, told EHF; “I am very happy and pleased. First and foremost, I am happy that we have already qualified for EHF EURO 2026 despite having two games left. That is great.”
It wasn’t just Iceland that found victory yesterday. Germany also took a step closer to securing their own spot with a 31-26 win over Austria in Hannover.
