Iceland Qualifies for European Handball Championship

The Icelandic men’s handball team beat Macedonia 34-26 in a crowded Laugardalshöll sports hall in Reykjavík yesterday, the Icelandic National Day—thereby qualifying for the European Championship in Men’s Handball in Austria, January 2010.

The Icelandic team was on fire throughout the game, especially in the second half when it led by 12 goals, 30-18, at one point, Morgunbladid reports.

The overall atmosphere was that of a national festival—spectators waved the Icelandic flag with their faces painted red, white and blue. They cheered their team on every step of the way.

Iceland and Norway tied on Sunday and therefore a victory over Macedonia was necessary to qualify for the European Championship.
