Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has described U.S. President Donald Trump’s response to Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) leaders as “very positive,” following a conference call from the JEF summit in Oslo yesterday.
As reported by mbl.is, the JEF leaders pushed Trump to not only back a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, but to also agree to coordinated trade sanctions should Russia fail to comply. The Joint Expeditionary Force is comprised of Nordic and Baltic nations, as well as the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
“Trump was very positive about having good relations with this group of countries and believed it was important that we stand together. He was, of course, happy to hear from us,” the Prime Minister later told reporters.
Shortly afterward the summit’s closing, Trump took to his own social media platform, Truth Social, to call for an “unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.” In his post, he warned that the United States and its allies will apply further sanctions on Russia if a 30-day ceasefire deal isn’t met.
Following the summit, the PM noted: “I’m not going to speculate on the future, but it is quite clear this is a new message from the U.S. President. The idea of trade sanctions in coordination with allies has not been presented in this way before.”
