The Icelandic women’s national soccer team will play Brazil in an international friendly match at Laugardalsvöllur national stadium in Reykjavík tonight. This will be the first time the Brazilian national team plays in Iceland, reports Vísir.
This is also the last match for the Icelandic women’s team before UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 kicks off in the Netherlands on July 16.
Despite being a ‘friendly,’ the match is a worthwhile warm up before EURO 2017 because Brazil has one of the best national teams in the world. The standout star of the Brazilian team is 31-year-old Marta Vieira da Silva, who has been named FIFA World Player of the Year five times. Marta has played 101 international games for Brazil and scored 105 goals.
Iceland, on the other hand, will be without one of its key players, Dagný Brynjarsdóttir, tonight due to commitments with Portland Thorns FC, the professional team Dagný plays for in the US. Iceland’s national women’s team coach Freyr Alexandersson explained that it was an agreement he had come to with Dagný’s coach in the US, as they had had to make a trade-off between Dagný playing for Iceland today or Portland this weekend, according to RÚV.
