Iceland lost its final Group C match against Austria 3 – 0 in Rotterdam last night, reports RÚV. This puts the team out of this year’s UEFA Women’s Euro Championship.
Having lost its two first matches, Iceland was at the bottom of Group C with zero points and was virtually guaranteed not to proceed to the quarter finals, even with a win against Austria. At the beginning of last night’s match, Austria was playing cautiously, however, so the match started relatively even. But things went downhill with just ten minutes left in the first half when Austria scored two back-to-back goals by Sarah Zadrazil and Nina Burger. Substitute Stefanie Enzinger scored the final goal came during the last minute of regular play.
The result is obviously a disappointment for the Icelandic team, although the players note that the team put everything they had into the competition. “It’s incredibly frustrating,” said captain Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir in an interview after the match. “Nothing worked out in our favor, but we can say that we gave it our all and did everything we could. We tried our best. Unfortunately, it ended like this.”
