Iceland One Goal from European Semi-Final

The Icelandic national team in men’s U-21 football beat Denmark 3-1 in the European Championship in Aalborg, Denmark, yesterday and was only one goal away from making it to the semi-final. Iceland’s participation in the competition is now over.

“I could envision that our dream was coming true,” Iceland’s coach Eyjólfur Sverrisson commented to Morgunbladid after the game. “I’m first and foremost very proud of the team and I find it unfair that we didn’t make it any further.”

“We bid the competition farewell with regret but overall I thought the team performed exceptionally well. We mustn’t forget that we were participating in our first major tournament,” Sverrisson added.

Iceland lost its first games against Belarus and Switzerland.
