Iceland Makes it to Pre-Olympics Despite Loss

Despite losing 26-33 against Spain in the European Men’s Handball Championship in Norway yesterday, the Icelandic team qualified for participating in the preliminary round of the Olympics this May in Beijing.

Because of the loss, however, Iceland blew its chance of earning 7th place in the tournament in Norway and did not make it to the semifinals.

Captain of the Icelandic team Ólafur Stefánsson told Fréttabladid that he is dissatisfied with Iceland’s performance in the European Championship. “I feel ashamed. […] We are much better than this and the gap between us and other teams is unacceptable. Everyone has to work on his performance, […] including the coach.”

Iceland’s coach Alfred Gíslason announced in a press conference after the game yesterday that he will hand in his resignation. “Due to family reasons I have decided to discontinue this double role because it is simply too much work. […] I believe I did my best, although it may not be evident after this tournament.”

HSÍ, Iceland’s Handball Association, has not decided who will replace Gíslason.
