Iceland makes donation to UNHCR

The Icelandic government has decided to donate USD 100,000 (EUR 74,000) to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for the aid of Iraqi refugees. About two million Iraqis have fled their country.

UNHCR estimates that in addition to the two million Iraqi refugees outside Iraqi borders, there are probably just as many refugees in Iraq, Morgunbladid reports.

Ten Iraqis have applied for refuge in Iceland but their applications were rejected.

The state appointed Iceland Refugee Council has discussed the possibility of accepting refugees from Iraq, but decided in cooperation with UNCHR that the next group of refugees to arrive in Iceland would be from Colombia.
