Mario Mandzukic scored the first goal at 27 minutes before being handed a red card. Darijo Srna scored the second at 47 minutes.

Iceland’s coach Lars Lagerbäck told RÚV that the team was naturally devastated after the loss but that they would ultimately learn from the game. “If we should comfort ourselves with something, the better team won today and it’s a maybe a little bit easier to accept the loss but we have to learn from this and the experience we get when we play good teams like that,” he said.

While emphasizing that Croatia was the better team, Lagerbäck admitted that he was a bit disappointed in the team’s performance. “I’m a little bit sad that it seems like we didn’t have the guts to play the way we wanted to […] I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t play it from Hannes [the goalkeeper].”

Former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen revealed in an emotional interview following the game that tonight’s match was his last for Iceland.
