Iceland Loses against Spain, Medal Ruled Out

The dream that the Icelandic national team in men’s handball would win a medal at its third major tournament in a row was shattered after a 24-32 loss against Spain at the World Championship in Sweden yesterday.

However, Iceland still has a chance of equaling its best achievement at a World Cup so far, Morgunbladid reports. Even so, the team’s disappointment was great.

Iceland plays treble champion France (Olympic, European and World) tonight. Much is at stake because if Iceland doesn’t place in the top seven seats it will not earn the right to compete at the next Olympic Games, in London in 2012, Fréttabladid reports.

Iceland is currently in third place in the intermediate heat. If Iceland beats France it stays in the third place and plays for the fifth place in the World Cup.

However, if Iceland loses against France and Hungary beats Spain and Germany wins against Norway, Iceland would play for the ninth place and lose its shot for the Olympics—unless Iceland were to become European Champion in Serbia next year.
