The Icelandic men’s handball team lost against South Korea, the Asian champion, 21-22 at the Olympics this morning. It was their first loss after three games; Iceland beat Russia last weekend and Germany, the world champion, on Tuesday.
Iceland and South Korea were equally strong in the first half but in the second half South Korea was always in the lead. Iceland could have made a tie in the last minute of the game, but Ásgeir Örn Hallgrímsson hit the crossbar, ruv.is reports.
Overall, the Icelandic team had a fairly poor game compared to its previous performances at the Olympics and, according to reports, key players like captain Ólafur Stefánsson and striker Snorri Steinn Gudjónsson were the mere shadows of themselves.
Iceland plays Denmark, the European champion next, at noon on Saturday (Icelandic time).
