The Icelandic men’s football team lost 2-0 against the Netherlands in the qualifying round for the 2010 World Championship in Rotterdam on Saturday. The Dutchmen scored the first goal 14 minutes into the game.
“It is of course always disappointing to lose but there is also a question of how people lose. That also has to be taken into account. We were playing against one of the stronger nations in the world and we can be proud after this game,” Iceland’s manager Ólafur Jóhannesson told Fréttabladid.
After the first goal was scored, Iceland defended their goal aggressively while creating some good opportunities to score. But Iceland did not take advantage of these opportunities and late in the game, the Netherlands earned their second goal.
Iceland’s next game is against Macedonia on Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík on Wednesday.
