The Icelandic woman national football team is one of the high jumpers on this year’s international FIFA ranking list.
Only Sweden and Brazil have gained more FIFA points than Iceland this year. In January 2007 Iceland was ranked number 21 with 1,789 FIFA points, but has now jumped to the 18th place with 1,827 points.
In January 2007 the coach of the team, Sigurdur Ragnar Eyjólfsson, also announced that the team’s goal for the coming seasons would be to qualify for either the European Championships or the World Championships. “This list helps us a lot in reviewing our position and possibilities” Eyjólfsson told Morgunbladid
The team is now fighting for a seat in the European Championships with a good chance of making it to the finals and is counting on local support for the last games in the semi-final, which will be held in Reykjavík. “We woke up the nation when we beat France last year with around 6,000 people showing up for the match against Serbia ,and we are counting on that support to follow us through to the last games” Eyjólfsson said.
The next match will be against Slovenia and Greece in June and July.
