Iceland on its way home?

Iceland lost 32-29 to Ukraine in the Handball World Championship in Germany yesterday and has to win France today, the European Champions, to stay in the competition.

Iceland’s trainer Alfred Gíslason was very disappointed with the players’ performance and said they had “committed suicide” in the game. Fréttabladid reports.

Left corner player and Iceland’s Sportsman of the Year Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson said this of yesterday’s match: “The defense was poor. The goal keeping was poor. The offense was awful. So this was just a lousy game.”

Iceland led by one goal after the first half of the game, but the players lost their ground during the second half and, according to Fréttabladid, played far from their best.

On Saturday Iceland beat Australia 45-20. In that game Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson scored 15 goals and was selected as the best player of the match.
