Professional golfer Birgir Leifur Hafthórsson of Kópavogur and Gardabaer Golf Club (GKG) secured his place in the biggest golf tournament in European yesterday.
Hafthórsson won his right to compete in the tournament by landing in the 24th place of the final qualifying tournament in San Rouque, Spain, as reported in all the main media.
Hafthórsson will be the first Icelandic golfer to compete in the European Golf Championship. He will take on many world-known golfers, such as Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia.
The champion golfer told Morgunbladid that he is thrilled about qualifying for the European Championship and that he has finally reached his goal after ten years.
Hafthórsson says he is proud of his achievement and believes he has proven beyond doubt that Icelanders can be successful as golfers.
