Iceland Gets New Chinese Ambassador

China’s new Ambassador to Iceland, Zhang Weidong, presented his letter of credence to President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson on Tuesday. His predecessor, Ma Jisheng, left the country suddenly at the beginning of the year. According to several Chinese media outlets, Ma was arrested on suspicion of espionage.

At Zhang’s meeting with the Icelandic president, they discussed the countries’ increasing cooperation, a free-trade agreement that took effect earlier this year, the use of geothermal energy and research of ice melt and glaciers in the Arctic regions, as stated on the presidential office’s website.

Among Zhang’s first tasks in office was to organize a celebration at the Chinese Embassy at the occasion of China’s 65th National Day yesterday, ruv.is reports.

Zhang’s résumé states that he earlier served as China’s Ambassador to Micronesia.
