Iceland Gets a Taste of Tomato Beer

Iceland’s first tomato beer was unveiled yesterday at Friðheimar restaurant near Reykholt in South Iceland, Vísir reports. Family-owned Friðheimar is known for its tomatoes, which it cultivates in greenhouses all year round. The on-site restaurant is located inside of one of these greenhouses, serving up a fresh tomato soup buffet right among the tomato vines.

“We got the idea over the winter [that] we wanted to go one step further and brew beer,” said owner Knútur Rafn Ármann. “The beer is being brewed in collaboration with Ægisgarð brewery in Reykjavík and is a ‘light, summery beer.”

The tomato brew is now being sold in the Friðheimar restaurant, but it’s yet to be determined if it will be sold elsewhere in the country.
